Smoking or Non - 1058 Words

Smoking in restaurants and bars has recently become a thing of the past in Georgia. Most restaurants used to have smoking sections. These poorly partitioned areas allowed patrons and employees to enjoy the carefree life of eating and smoking simultaneously, without having to go outside for a smoke break. Fortunately, the Georgia Smokefree Air Act of 2005 made it illegal for smokers to light up inside restaurants where anyone under the age of eighteen may be present. Now, non-smokers can go into practically any eating place in the state and not have to worry about their food being seasoned with the cook’s cigarette ash. The savings from not having to replace the restaurant furnishings would not be the only benefit to business owners. The owners would also not have to worry about the danger of a fire starting from a carelessly placed cigarette. I had the opportunity as a smoker to have many personal mishaps from my own bad habits, and it is all too easy to see how a multitude of smokers could spell disaster. One flippantly tossed cigarette has the power to destroy a building, and take lives, all while placing numerous public safety workers in harm’s way. When I was in high school, I was a junior volunteer firefighter. The Smokefree Air Act was not in place at that time, and smoking was permitted inside most restaurants. One night, a local sports bar, caught on fire. While battling the blaze, two fellow firefighters were badly wounded. One of those men needed extensive surgeries and therapy for several months afterwards. The cause of the fire was believed to be from a cigarette that had fallen onto a fabric covered chair. Had the smoking ban been around at that time, the fire may not have occurred. While many people are grateful for the marvelous new laws, there are still some who think the Smokefree Air Act is a violation of their constitutional rights. A system for actors Essay Example For Students

A system for actors Essay Konstantin Sergeivich Alexiev, better known as Stanislavski, created a system for actors to follow in order to prepare for a role. His system consisted of various exercises that could be applied to a character, especially in a naturalistic play, and make them more believable. The realism of Anton Chekhovs plays, in particular The Cherry Orchard, provides an ideal environment for an actor to put Stanislavskis system into operation. The depth of the characters requires a complex preparation that is perfectly matched with the many exercises that comprises the famed system that many actors still use as a guide, despite being completed 75 years ago. Chekhov and Stanislavski worked closely throughout their careers, until Chekhovs death in 1904 and although they certainly shared a mutual admiration for each others work, it was recorded that Chekhov was sometimes exasperated by the lengths that Stanislavski would go to achieve results surely a fault that Stanislavski himself would admit to, as it corresponds with his statement that his system was a way of life. It is certainly true that the system requires a great amount of dedication and commitment to the part if an actor is willing to complete the full preparation that Stanislavski demanded from an actor. The various exercises formed the basis of what we today call method acting, with such theories as the magic if, aims and objectives, hot-seating, given circumstances, circles of attention, super objectives and tempo-rhythm creating a comprehensive scheme which must be compiled to convince the audience that what they were seeing on stage was reality. These theories can all be used by an actor playing one of the characters in The Cherry Orchard to provide depth to the characters and to completely understand the complexities of the role so that the character is completely believable. Stanislavski was particularly intrigued by the sub-text and subtlety of The Cherry Orchard and although Chekhov was dissatisfied with Stanislavskis interpretation of The Cherry Orchard it cannot be denied that his system perfectly brings out the unsaid in Chekhovs script. Chekhovs plays were written with the aim of portraying difficult issues within a realistic setting, with believable characters and the slow pace of everyday reality. The meandering pace of the play, along with the aimlessness of the main characters could on the surface prove difficult when attempting to establish the characters aims and objectives in a scene. In order to apply the system to this play, an actor must constantly consider exactly what their character is attempting to achieve scene by scene. For example, in Act Two, Lyubov Andreyevna and Lopahkin have completely contrasting aims in the scene where Lopahkin is trying to convince Lyubov Andreyevna to sell the cherry orchard, although their super-objectives for the act correspond they both want to ensure the financial security of the family. This exercise is instrumental in this case in making sure that the actor can interact with the others on stage and if an actor is following Stanislavskis system to the letter, then they must think about the aims and objectives of their character at all times when rehearsing a scene. In order to enhance the various contrasting aims, a director could use tempo-rhythm as a means of emphasising each characters purpose in a scene. This practise should not merely be used to provide the scene with the obvious contrasting pace between characters, but also to experiment with alternating tempo-rhythms to add another dimension to the characters. Lopahkins status could be dramatically altered by whether he is hysterically attempting to reason with family or keeping his head and speaking calmly and rationally. .uf15841a9cf4d944f830d9e0c56de0b7b , .uf15841a9cf4d944f830d9e0c56de0b7b .postImageUrl , .uf15841a9cf4d944f830d9e0c56de0b7b .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .uf15841a9cf4d944f830d9e0c56de0b7b , .uf15841a9cf4d944f830d9e0c56de0b7b:hover , .uf15841a9cf4d944f830d9e0c56de0b7b:visited , .uf15841a9cf4d944f830d9e0c56de0b7b:active { border:0!important; } .uf15841a9cf4d944f830d9e0c56de0b7b .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .uf15841a9cf4d944f830d9e0c56de0b7b { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .uf15841a9cf4d944f830d9e0c56de0b7b:active , .uf15841a9cf4d944f830d9e0c56de0b7b:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .uf15841a9cf4d944f830d9e0c56de0b7b .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .uf15841a9cf4d944f830d9e0c56de0b7b .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .uf15841a9cf4d944f830d9e0c56de0b7b .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .uf15841a9cf4d944f830d9e0c56de0b7b .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .uf15841a9cf4d944f830d9e0c56de0b7b:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .uf15841a9cf4d944f830d9e0c56de0b7b .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .uf15841a9cf4d944f830d9e0c56de0b7b .uf15841a9cf4d944f830d9e0c56de0b7b-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .uf15841a9cf4d944f830d9e0c56de0b7b:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: The play "Merchant of Venice" EssayThese two techniques work particularly well when used in conjunction with each other during rehearsals for plays such as The Cherry Orchard. However, Stanislavskis sweeping statement that his system is a way of life cannot be applied to a technique alone, as an actor or director could easily do these exercises in rehearsal and forget about them until the next time that they go into character. When combined with the other techniques in Stanislavskis system, though, a procedure is constructed that cannot be left at the theatre and must be taken home by all the actors so that they can fully step inside the character and live as them.

Vegan Essay Example For Students

Vegan Essay The greatest of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.(Mahatma Gandhi Quotes) Gandhi said this in his book, The Moral Basis of Vegetarianism, this belief is still valid in todays modern society. At the present time in the United States, the concern for the health and well being of animals is drastically increasing. And one of the most substantial indications of this is the increasing number of Vegan Essays and vegetarians in our nation. Today there are over half a million vegans and countless millions of vegetarians in the United States alone. We will write a custom essay on Vegan specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now There are several different kinds of vegetarians following this practice. A vegan consumes no foods of any kind produced by animals. An ovo-vegetarian eats eggs, but no dairy foods or animal flesh. A lacto-vegetarian eats dairy foods, but no eggs or animal flesh. A lacto-ovo-vegetarian eats dairy foods and eggs, but no animal flesh. These people are most commonly referred to as just vegetarians. A semi-vegetarian eats dairy food and egg and occasionally includes fish or chicken but no other animal flesh.(Seameons,p2) Aside from dietary habits, a vegan also has several more rules to follow. A vegan cannot use any product made from the body parts of an animal such as leather, ivory, fur, and even pearls. They also cannot use products which have been tested on animals. Vegans are sometimes referred to as an animals greatest ally. Veganism originally started in India in the first century A. D.. Hindus did not become vegan because of deep religious reasons or for personal health reasons, but because of environmental pressures. It became both uneconomical and unsanitary to raise animals in so crowded an environment. (Seamen p. 5). Through the centuries veganism never really caught on due to lack of modern medicine and improper understanding of the functions of the human body. Around the beginning of the twentieth century, it is thought that the discovery of vitamins and minerals gave birth to the idea of eating for optimum health and fitness, and thus, the rediscovery of veganism. Up through the 1900s, more and more people started to say stop to the unfair torture of animals. Since the dawn of man, humans have used animals to their advantage. Animal flesh has been a good source of vitamins and protein. The skin was used for warmth and shelter. Before several of the modern advances made by mankind, animals were needed to sustain human survival and prosperity. In todays society, many of the products on our store shelves are tested on animals for safety reasons. Even with all the great uses there are for dead animals, modern nutrition and science has made so many new advancements in research that it has become completely unnecessary to kill any animal for any reason. Humans can survive solely on vegetation and supplementation. Animal testing is unnecessary due to new DNA and computer graphic research. In this paper three major issues dealing with veganism will be discussed. Whether or not the vegan life style is healthier then the average way of life? Is animal testing necessary or should it be banned? And should animals be used in the entertainment industry? There is no reason to injure or kill animals for any reason. Americans as a society should be vegan. One major issue is whether or not the vegan lifestyle is healthier than the average way of life. The average way of life consists of the four major food groups: meat, dairy, grains, and fruits/vegetables. In the vegan lifestyle, meat and dairy foods are cut out of the diet. From a nutritional standpoint, animal food does have its advantages. .uc817855359cde7bf77614a47ec0100b3 , .uc817855359cde7bf77614a47ec0100b3 .postImageUrl , .uc817855359cde7bf77614a47ec0100b3 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .uc817855359cde7bf77614a47ec0100b3 , .uc817855359cde7bf77614a47ec0100b3:hover , .uc817855359cde7bf77614a47ec0100b3:visited , .uc817855359cde7bf77614a47ec0100b3:active { border:0!important; } .uc817855359cde7bf77614a47ec0100b3 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .uc817855359cde7bf77614a47ec0100b3 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .uc817855359cde7bf77614a47ec0100b3:active , .uc817855359cde7bf77614a47ec0100b3:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .uc817855359cde7bf77614a47ec0100b3 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .uc817855359cde7bf77614a47ec0100b3 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .uc817855359cde7bf77614a47ec0100b3 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .uc817855359cde7bf77614a47ec0100b3 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .uc817855359cde7bf77614a47ec0100b3:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .uc817855359cde7bf77614a47ec0100b3 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .uc817855359cde7bf77614a47ec0100b3 .uc817855359cde7bf77614a47ec0100b3-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .uc817855359cde7bf77614a47ec0100b3:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Legalize Marijuana Essay For one thing it is nutrient-dense; it is a concentrated source of calories, protein, iron, zinc, copper, and in the case of dairy products, calcium.
